Political Posters: Work-in-progress

Happy new year! One of my new years resolutions I’ve set myself is to post more of my work on this blog as the links on the right of my page are slowly becoming outdated with the new stuff I’ve been producing, one of these being the set of posters shown above to support Aung San Suu Kyi, a Burmese politician and leader of the political party ‘National League for Democracy’.

In short form, the Burmese government (military) called national elections in May 1990. Aung San Suu Kyi’s NLD convincingly won the polls, despite the fact the she herself was under house arrest and was disqualified from standing. The military refused to hand over control and has remained in power ever since.

It was only until recently that Suu Kyi’s NLD said it would return to politics and re-register to run in the next as-yet unscheduled by-elections. The ‘Unity is Powerful’ quote that I’ve used for the heading of the posters is based on the idea of the Burmese people working together to overpower the military government that initially ignored the fact that the NLD won the elections in 1990 and refused to hand over power.

I wanted the posters to seem almost scrappy and handmade so I chose to use cellulose thinners to image-transfer each bit of text onto the paper. The original ‘Unity is Powerful’ was created using a paint brush and then scanned and blown-up to scale. The left poster is about A0-size, the right A2. I’m not completely happy with them as I feel the main heading should possibly be more relevant to the story of why people should vote for the NLD so I’ll probably do a few more versions trying out different quotes.
