Art of The Title posted an in-depth interview today with The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo director David Fincher, title sequence creative director Tim Miller (of Blur Studios) and poster designer Neil Kellerhouse (of Kellerhouse, Inc.). Here’s an excerpt from Neil’s portion of the interview:
Art of the Title: So, did you work on the poster designs and the type simultaneously or was it a separate process?
Neil Kellerhouse: They were created at the same time. The closer you can get to something that’s authentic and appropriate – if you have good reasons for your decisions and can speak about your ideas as solutions – the easier it may be for someone to accept something they’ve never seen before.
Art of the Title: How were the posters and other collateral developed?
Neil Kellerhouse: David worked with the photographer Jean-Baptiste Mondino. You can see from the quality of the photographs that there was a comfortable relationship between Mondino and his subjects. It’s a real luxury to have great photography to work with. I haven’t seen many shoots that have been as comprehensive as this one was. It really gave us a lot of latitude with the marketing materials.
Art of the Title: How many concepts did you go through for the poster designs?
Neil Kellerhouse: Many, many concepts – hundreds.
(end of excerpt)
The whole interview is outstanding. Neil talks about his creative process and how he came up with the title treatment as well. Click the image above to read the rest of the interview.
When they said “in-depth,” they weren’t kidding. Awesome interview with and a look into the entire process of the Blur Studio’s work on the title sequence as well as Neil Kellerhouse’s process on the poster. Some really amazing poster and type explorations. Definitely worth checking out.
